Get your home storm-ready this week

This week (5–11 October) is Get Ready Week, and Redland City Council is urging everyone to prepare now for storm and bushfire season. The main risks on the Redlands Coast are thunderstorms with heavy rain and flash flooding, large hail and damaging winds that bring down power, and summer heatwaves.

As acting Mayor Julie Talty put it, the job is to understand your local risks, make an emergency plan and pack a kit. Your home is likely your biggest asset, so it’s worth an hour this weekend.

Around the house

Clear gutters and downpipes so heavy rain has somewhere to go. Trim branches overhanging the roof. Tie down or put away anything that could become a missile in a strong wind — outdoor furniture, trampolines, pot plants. Check that your roof, fences and garage door are in good shape.

Pack a kit

Council’s emergency kit list

Bottled water✓
Battery radio, torch and spare batteries✓
Medication and toiletries✓
Important documents✓
Portable phone chargers✓

Check your cover

Pull out your home and contents policy and check what it covers for storm, flood and power-surge damage. Take a quick video walk-through of each room on your phone — if you ever have to claim, it makes the process much easier.

Get the alerts

Sign up to the Redlands Coast Disaster Dashboard for real-time alerts sent straight to your phone. Get Ready Queensland (getready.qld.gov.au) and the Bureau of Meteorology (bom.gov.au) are the other two worth bookmarking.

The Redlands read

A well-kept home is a valuable one

Buyers and building inspectors notice the basics: clear gutters, sound roofing, trees kept off the house. An hour of maintenance before storm season protects your home now and when the time comes to sell.

Curious what your home is worth in this market?
