September 2026 · Issue #5

Good news from around the city.

Not every story needs a market angle. Here are three from the past fortnight that say a lot about the place we live.

A breakfast that raised $19,000

A community breakfast last week raised $19,000 for school chaplaincy programs — money that goes straight into wellbeing support for kids in local schools. I love this one because it’s so unglamorous. No gala, no auction of signed jerseys. Just a room full of locals having breakfast together because the schools asked, and nineteen thousand dollars walking out the door to where it’s needed. That’s the Redlands I recognise.

Fishing culture and the written word

Two new exhibitions have opened locally — one celebrating the region’s fishing heritage, the other the written word. If you haven’t been to a local gallery in a while, this is your nudge. We live in a place where the fishing history runs generations deep, and seeing it treated as culture rather than just pastime is worth an hour of your weekend. Take a parent. They’ll know half the boats.

A new way to have your say

Council has launched a new community engagement channel designed to make it easier for residents to weigh in on local decisions before they’re made, not after. I’d encourage you to bookmark it. Between the City Plan work I covered in earlier issues, the Birkdale precinct, and the infrastructure planning endorsed this month, the next few years will set the shape of this city for decades — and the people who show up in the consultation windows are the ones who get heard. It costs you ten minutes. Your street is worth ten minutes.

That’s the corner for this issue. If you’ve got a local story that deserves a run here — a club doing something good, a fundraiser that needs eyeballs, a neighbour who quietly does the work — reply to the newsletter and tell me about it. This section only works if it’s actually ours.
